The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of planning a military coup in the ninth month and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he was staying under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes said the move to detain the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This involved attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the magistrate said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on digital networks on the previous day: Will you battle for your nation, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your couch? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so backers could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our country."
